Bass down to 25 Hz, with no cabinet vibration
Sonos Sub 4 is a wireless subwoofer with two opposed elliptical woofers, two class D amplifiers and a ported design: it reaches down to 25 Hz, connects over Wi-Fi 6 and can stand upright or lie flat.
Sub 4 is added to a soundbar or to the speakers of a Sonos system. It takes over the lowest frequencies and, in doing so, eases the work of the other drivers, which reproduce mids and highs more cleanly. It needs no signal cables: power is enough, and it can be placed wherever is most convenient in the room.
Key features
- Pair of elliptical woofers (12.7 x 20.3 cm) facing each other
- Two class D digital amplifiers
- Ported cabinet
- Frequency response down to 25 Hz
- Wi-Fi 6 on 2.4 and 5 GHz and 10/100 Ethernet port
- Vertical or horizontal placement
- Automatic equalisation and Trueplay
- Two subwoofers can be used with Arc Ultra
Opposed woofers
The two woofers are mounted face to face, pointing inwards. The forces generated by the two membranes cancel each other out: distortion practically disappears, and with it vibration and rattling. The reflex port extends the response downwards and increases output at the deepest frequencies.
Which products it pairs with
In a home theatre, Sub 4 connects to the Arc Ultra, Arc, Beam (first and second generation) and Ray soundbars. For music it pairs with Five, Era 300 and Era 100. At least one non-portable amplified Sonos product is required. The level balances itself with that of the paired speakers, and the equalisation can be adjusted in the Sonos app.
Placement and Trueplay
Sub 4 can stand upright next to a piece of furniture or lie flat, for example under a sofa. Trueplay measures the acoustics of the room and corrects the response, to avoid bass that is too boomy or too weak even when the subwoofer is close to a wall. The finish is matte, matching that of Sonos soundbars and speakers.
Electronics and power consumption
Compared with previous generations, Sub 4 has a new processor, more memory and a radio module compatible with Wi-Fi 6; alternatively it connects to the router through its Ethernet port. When idle it uses up to 50% less power. To add it to the system, power is connected, the app is opened and the connect button is pressed.
Included accessories
Sub 4 comes with a 2 metre power cable.
