A linear power supply with six outputs for Pro-Ject's Box Design electronics: it replaces the standard adapters of five components and of one DC-powered turntable.
Power Box DS3 Sources: the design
The Power Box DS3 Sources starts from the idea that the power supply belongs to the audio path and affects the sound. In place of the small adapters supplied with each unit it provides a single linear, non-switching supply able to feed up to six components: streamers, CD players, preamplifiers and a turntable with a DC motor. It is not suitable for integrated amplifiers or power amplifiers.
At its heart is an audio-type toroidal transformer with a copper-foil screen between the primary and secondary windings: it works as an isolating transformer and stops mains-borne interference from reaching the equipment. Its power reserve is far greater than a standard adapter's and its output impedance is low; the voltage is rectified and precisely regulated, and filtering relies on 10,000 µF of low-ESR capacitors, with residual ripple below 1 mV. A soft start prevents current surges at switch-on, and surge protection is built in.
The outputs are two at 9 V, three at 18 V and one at 15 V for the turntable, and the six standard connecting leads are included. A word on compatibility: the 15 V output must not be used with the Xtension 9, 10 and 12, the RPM 9 and RPM 10, the X8 or the Signature line models, which have heavy platters and a high current draw; for these Pro-Ject points to two other supplies, Power Box RS2 Phono and Power Box RS Uni TT. Better-shielded cables and magnetic side panels in wood are optional extras bought separately.
