Primare R15

Primare R15: a compact phono preamplifier for MM and MC cartridges

R15 is an external phono preamplifier: it takes the low-level signal coming from a moving magnet or a moving coil cartridge and raises it to the level required by the line inputs of the system. It therefore sits between the turntable and the amplifier. Within the 15 series it is the answer for those who use MC cartridges, whereas the MM15 board that fits inside the I15 integrated is a stage for moving magnet cartridges.

The circuit derives from that of the larger R35 model and, according to Primare, is designed with equal care while fitting into the three-quarter cabinet of the 15 series. Gain is enough for nearly every MM and MC cartridge on the market, and the input adjustments let the unit be matched to the rest of the system. The standby button is hidden inside the logo on the front of the unit.

Connections

The rear panel holds one pair of RCA sockets for the turntable and one RCA pair feeding a line input. There are also trigger sockets, one in and one out, and a subsonic filter.
