Extruded-aluminium back box for the Paradigm SFC12-SYS in-wall subwoofer: the rigid, dedicated enclosure the subwoofer works in, and a required part of every installation.
SFC12-SYS back box: why it is essential
With in-wall subwoofers the result usually depends on the space found between the studs, which changes from one wall to the next. Paradigm deals with the problem at its source: the SFC12-SYS does not use the wall cavity but an enclosure of its own, designed and tuned for that subwoofer, so the low-frequency response stays the same on every job. That is why the back box is not an optional extra: the maker lists it as a necessary part of the system.
The structure is extruded aluminium, chosen for stiffness: panels that do not flex add fewer resonances to the bass. The back box includes an isolating mounting arrangement that decouples the subwoofer from the building, so the energy stays in the listening room rather than passing into the wall and the rooms next door. Paradigm intends the system for new builds, where the enclosure goes in before the wall is closed.
Fitting calls for only a few figures. The back box is 87.1 mm deep, the mounting dimensions are 156.39 × 37.23 × 9.98 cm and it weighs 29.9 kg, a value to allow for when fixing it. To attach the subwoofer grille, the plasterboard or similar lining must be at least 12.7 mm thick.
