Master of detail
Rega Nd9 is the Reference MM cartridge in the Nd series, with boron cantilever, Fine Line nude diamond stylus, N55 magnet and low-inductance miniaturised generator.
Nd9 represents the pinnacle of Rega moving-magnet technology. The design takes the Nd-series platform and introduces a boron cantilever paired with a Fine Line nude diamond stylus, a solution derived from Rega's experience with Reference MC cartridges. The combination of very low mass and boron rigidity allows an extremely fast response to groove movement, while the generator with N55 magnet and miniaturised coils retains the series' low-inductance architecture.

Boron cantilever
The cantilever uses a solid boron rod, selected for its high rigidity-to-mass ratio. A stiffer structure flexes less during tracking and transfers stylus movement to the generator more accurately. The joint between the Nd magnet and boron rod requires an extremely small coupling element designed to accommodate the different diameters of the components without introducing unnecessary mass.
Fine Line stylus and generator
The Fine Line nude diamond is mounted on the boron cantilever and designed to follow very small variations in the record surface. The generator uses miniaturised parallel coils with 1275 turns of 38-micron wire and an N55 neodymium magnet. The optimised air gap and symmetrical geometry improve linearity and channel separation, while low inductance helps extend high-frequency response.
PPS body
The cartridge is housed in a glass-filled PPS body moulded to very tight tolerances. The combination of low mass and rigidity lowers the stress placed on the bearings of the tonearm and keeps the generator stable. Rega's three-point mounting integrates the cartridge with compatible tonearms and helps preserve the intended alignment without additional adaptors or mechanical elements.
Use and pairing
Nd9 can also be ordered already fitted at the factory on Planar 8. Rega specifies a tracking force of 1.75 g, while nominal output is between 5 and 6 mV. The Reference design therefore combines the easy interfacing of a high-output MM cartridge with a cantilever and stylus derived from Rega's higher-level MC experience.
