A three-way in-wall loudspeaker from the Masterpiece CI range, supplied as a pair: one Folded Motion XT Obsidian tweeter, one midrange and two woofers of 165 mm in carbon fibre, plus three passive radiators, on a panel 119 cm tall.
Monument 7XW: three ways inside the wall
Monument 7XW counts seven drive units and splits the work three ways: the Folded Motion XT Obsidian tweeter above 3,200 Hz, a 165 mm midrange down to 200 Hz and, below that, two woofers of equal diameter assisted by three passive radiators. The outcome is a quoted response of 52 Hz to 25 kHz with 95 dB sensitivity, figures that make it a built-in speaker suited to two-channel listening as well. The suggested amplifier delivers 20 to 300 watts into a 4 ohm load.
The midrange has a suspension made deliberately stiffer than a woofer of equal size would use: resonance moves up and the unit works naturally within the middle band alone. The passive radiators share the woofers' unidirectional carbon-fibre cone with its Nomex reinforcement and are there to draw strong, clean bass from a slim sealed box. The tweeter, covering 80° by 30°, may be turned when the speaker is installed lying on its side.
The phenolic-resin baffle, a material MartinLogan also uses for the Neolith cabinet, is joined to a closed rear box that takes cavity size out of the equation. Installation needs an opening of 1,157 x 236 mm and 96.5 mm of depth; die-cast aluminium clamps pull the frame against the wall and a life-size template is included. The sprung terminals, fitted in two sets, have a 4.5 mm hole. The pre-installation bracket and the frame for surface mounting are bought separately.
