Absolute reference Hi-Fi bookshelf speaker
The KEF Reference 1 Meta is the only three-way bookshelf speaker in KEF's Reference range — and it could be the only speaker you will ever need. Sold as a pair, it packs into a relatively compact format the same technology and the same construction philosophy as the floorstanding models in the series: the twelfth generation of the Uni-Q® driver with MAT™, a construction carried out entirely by hand in Maidstone, Kent, and a sonic capability that goes well beyond what its dimensions would suggest. It can be paired with the dedicated S-RF1 Floor Stand (available separately).
Uni-Q® Gen 12 with MAT™: the perfect point source
The twelfth-generation Uni-Q® driver positions the 25 mm aluminium tweeter with MAT™ exactly at the centre of the 125 mm aluminium midrange, creating a single acoustic point source. The result is remarkably even sound dispersion throughout the room, regardless of the listening position.
The MAT™ (Metamaterial Absorption Technology) technology is a patented acoustic labyrinth capable of absorbing 99% of the unwanted sound waves coming from the rear of the tweeter, eliminating distortions and colourations at source. The resulting sound has a purity and naturalness that are hard to achieve with any other technology.
Floorstanding speaker performance in a compact format
The 165 mm aluminium woofer provides low-frequency extension down to 30 Hz in-room, with a frequency response that reaches up to 45 kHz and a maximum sound pressure of 111 dB. Harmonic distortion remains below 0.1% between 2 kHz and 20 kHz — a professional-level performance for a bookshelf speaker.
The crossover frequencies of 450 Hz and 2.1 kHz ensure a seamless transition between the drivers, with tonal coherence and a three-dimensional soundstage of remarkable precision. As with all models in the series, each pair is measured and matched to within 0.5 dB of the reference standard maintained in the KEF laboratory.
Construction, finishes and integration into the room
With dimensions of 440 × 205 × 422 mm and a weight of 18.2 kg each, the Reference 1 Meta is compact in its proportions but solid and finished in every detail. The cabinet is available in five premium finishes: High-Gloss White/Champagne, High-Gloss White/Blue, Satin Walnut/Silver, High-Gloss Black/Grey and High-Gloss Black/Copper.
The bass reflex system can be configured with a short port (response from 40 Hz) or a long port (response from 37 Hz) to optimise acoustic performance according to the room. With an impedance of 4 Ω and a sensitivity of 85 dB, it requires a quality amplifier of between 50 and 200 W.
The reference that grows with your system
The Reference 1 Meta integrates perfectly into the KEF Reference range, sharing drivers, MAT™ technology and construction philosophy with the floorstanding models. It can be paired with the dedicated S-RF1 Floor Stand (available in Mineral White and Carbon Black) for optimal positioning, or included in a multichannel surround system together with the Reference 3 Meta or the Reference 4 Meta, maintaining perfect tonal coherence across all channels.
