For the love of 78 rpm records
Rega Planar 78 is a single-speed turntable designed exclusively for 78 rpm records, with RB220 tonearm, 24 V motor and Advanced EBLT drive belt.
Planar 78 focuses the design on playing 78 rpm records, removing unnecessary functions and dedicating the structure to the essential mechanical components. It uses the precision RB220 tonearm, a low-noise 24 V synchronous motor and the Advanced EBLT drive belt. The phenolic resin platter uses a flywheel effect to support rotational stability, while the simple, rigid plinth keeps the turntable consistent with the philosophy of other Rega models.

Dedicated 78 rpm design
The speed is fixed at 78 rpm and the entire turntable is optimised for this format. Rega avoids selectors and additional functions that are not required for this specific use, keeping the mechanical path simple. For playing 78 rpm records, the Rega RB78 MM cartridge is available, designed specifically for this purpose and sold separately.
RB220 tonearm
The RB220 draws on Rega's experience with earlier tonearms and is built with a one-piece cast arm tube and three-point mounting to the plinth. The bearing assembly uses selected low-friction components for vertical and horizontal movement, with the aim of providing stable and accurate tracking. The support structure is designed to limit stress transferred to the plinth and keep tonearm movement free and controlled.
Motor and drive
The low-noise 24 V synchronous motor is paired with the Advanced EBLT drive belt, which is part of the standard specification. This arrangement aims for stable and consistent rotation, while the phenolic resin platter adds useful inertia through the flywheel effect. Planar 78 therefore retains a simple mechanism dedicated to the format, without adding speed-change systems that would serve no purpose on a turntable built specifically for 78 rpm playback.
Supplied accessories
Planar 78 is supplied with a clear dust cover. The Rega RB78 cartridge is not included and is sold separately.
