ULTRALIGHT BASE

The Planar 10 is the third Rega turntable built using the brand new Tancast 8 ultra-light polyurethane foam material (developed for the aerospace industry). This material is sandwiched between two layers of HPL (High Pressure Laminate). HPL is extraordinarily thin and extremely stiff . The new construction allows for a base that is 30% lighter than the original RP8, while simultaneously offering greater stiffness.

DB TECHNOLOGY (DOUBLE PILLAR TECHNOLOGY)
“MASS ABSORBS ENERGY – LOST ENERGY = LOST MUSIC”!

A featherweight plinth coupled with a double phenolic resin ferrule mounted specifically where greater stiffness is required (between the arm mounting point and the platter hub) forms a sonic tensioned band structure. This design prevents energy absorption and unwanted resonances which would add unnatural distortion to the music. Likewise, a heavier mass can transfer more unwanted resonances such as motor or hub noise directly to the spinning disc. The use of the ferrule instead of a compact surface allows the use of the double layer of phenolic resin in the critical areas, simultaneously allowing a reduction in the weight of the base, so as to directly solve the problems relating to the absorption of the mass and the undesired transfer of power.

THE NEW RB3000 ARM

REGA is known for the quality of its tonearm bearings, especially the very accurate construction of the housing and pivot. Technical characteristics such as “sphericity” and “parallelism” are critical. In the last three years REGA has identified a new manufacturing process which improves on all these characteristics guaranteeing an exact construction down to the micron. The RB3000 is the first Rega arm to benefit from these improvements.

The entire arm structure is designed to have the minimum of mechanical joints, using the stiffest materials in critical areas. The tolerances of the RB3000 arm are so tight that no adhesives are used at any point throughout production. Our latest ultra-precision, low-mass vertical bearing has been engineered to fit perfectly into the Planar 10 turntable philosophy . The RB3000 tonearm uses our state-of-the-art vertical bearing with tolerance to less than a thousandth of a millimetre. This guarantees absolutely free movement and no interference. Simply put, a frictionless, interference-free bearing can read displacements down to the micron within the record groove. The RB3000 also utilizes the latest award-winning aluminum tube, individually and meticulously polished for maximum mass minimization, which has been designed to redistribute mass and further reduce tension and resonances. The advanced tube design increases the stiffness of the entire arm to further reduce stress on the bearing.

HUB ASSEMBLY

The Planar 10 uses a new low mass center hub assembly. A machined one-piece aluminum sub-platter and hardened tool steel shaft rotate within a bronze housing mounted inside the base . This new mount is designed to eradicate any potential energy transfer or storage in the base.

CERAMIC PLATE

The Planar 10 uses a custom ceramic platter with a flywheel effect. The platter is manufactured from ceramic oxide powder which is compressed and then fired and diamond finished to ensure perfect accuracy and flatness across the entire surface. It also includes a new, improved mate type with the backplate.

LOW NOISE 24 VOLT MOTOR

The Planar 10 uses the latest generation of low noise 24V synchronous motor technology. Specifically fitted using the highest level of fit while maintaining the very high vibration isolation of previous models. This new (bottom) mounting technology is directly borrowed from the Rega Naiad reference turntable. This unique way of mounting eliminates all stress to the engine body: reduced vibrations and stiffer mounting allow for more drive thanks to the new EBLT belts . Each motor is individually hand calibrated to match the new PL10 PSU before being installed in the turntable to optimize the anti-vibration circuitry.

EBLT STRAPS

For three years Rega researched and developed with the collaboration of chemists the use of a new rubber compound tailored for its belts. Using a special hardening system, the new belt offers better constancy of modulus (a constant representing the degree of a specific property of a substance, specifically elasticity). These new belts are produced on a reference machine designed by Rega which allows the production of perfectly round and exactly sized belts, critical characteristics for perfect speed stability.

PL10 PSUs

The PL10 PSU offers the ultimate in motor control stability , simple electronic speed selection and user fine-tuning to ensure maximum precision and control over the life of the motor. Mounted within the latest Rega chassis, the PL10 PSU is designed to drive our low noise 24V motor as accurately and quietly as possible .
Speed and engine control are achieved using a new DSP (Digital Signal Processor) generator built around a high stability crystal. This component splits the crystal's accurate square waves at the exact frequency required to rotate the platter at the required speed. The DSP also generates a nearly perfect sine wave to power the motor . During production all vibration removal and speed fine tuning are performed on each product to match each engine for best performance.
