2i: the design
The 2i is a sealed two-way speaker just over 25 cm tall and weighing 1.54 kg, aimed at anyone who wants the Folded Motion tweeter in a small stereo system or on the front and surround channels of a home cinema. The 89 mm woofer has a polypropylene diaphragm, a stamped steel basket and a stiff dust cap that limits cone deformation; it works in an asymmetrical chamber shaped to avoid resonance. The stated response runs from 110 to 23,000 Hz.
The 24 × 25 mm Folded Motion tweeter uses a very light pleated diaphragm that moves air by compressing it between the folds, instead of pushing it as a dome does: for the same footprint the radiating area is far greater, the travel needed is smaller and distortion stays low. It meets the woofer at 3,800 Hz through a Vojtko crossover, named after MartinLogan's head of audio technology: selected parts, a simple circuit and final tuning in a space that resembles an actual living room.
The cabinet's curves also help with mounting: using the bracket provided, the 2i fixes to the wall at either of two angles, so the sound can be aimed at the listening seat, and it can be fitted upside down when it has to go high up. Those who prefer can stand it on a shelf, beside the television or on a stand. The push terminals are recessed into the cabinet, have curved guides that lead the cable in and also take banana plugs. The grille is perforated metal.
