Built with precision
Rega RB220 is a turntable tonearm with one-piece aluminium arm tube, three-point mounting, adjustable bias and bearings designed to minimise friction.
RB220 evolves one of Rega's most widely used tonearms and employs an aluminium arm tube formed as a single piece together with the three-point mounting system. Each example is hand assembled using dedicated tools and specified tightening torques, with the aim of achieving smooth movement and stable geometry. The current version also incorporates adjustable bias, allowing the tonearm to be matched more flexibly to different cartridges.
Key features
- One-piece aluminium arm tube
- Three-point mounting system
- Hand assembly
- Very low friction levels
- Simple adjustment
- Adjustable bias
One-piece aluminium arm tube
The RB220 arm tube is made from a single piece of aluminium and designed to keep mass low without sacrificing rigidity. Its form and material distribution are engineered to limit stress on the ultra-low-friction polymer bearings and provide a stable structure during playback. Three-point mounting transfers load to the plinth in a controlled way and simplifies installation on suitable turntables.
Bearings and assembly
Each tonearm is assembled manually using dedicated Rega equipment and specified tightening values. Assembly precision matters because even small amounts of bearing play can become unwanted movement while the stylus follows the groove. The design therefore aims for very free horizontal and vertical movement while keeping the cartridge stable and reducing energy dissipated in the support system.
Adjustable bias
The bias, or anti-skating, system can be adjusted according to the cartridge in use. This adjustment compensates for the force that tends to pull the tonearm towards the centre of the record and helps maintain more even tracking during playback. The facility makes RB220 more versatile with different cartridges than designs with fixed compensation.
Geometry and compatibility
RB220 uses Rega geometry with an effective length of 236.5 mm and effective mass of 11 g, values that suit many cartridges compatible with prepared turntables. The combination of three-point mounting, adjustable bias and one-piece arm tube keeps set-up straightforward without giving up the ability to match the tonearm correctly to the chosen cartridge.
