Its distinguishing feature is a platter that turns both ways, so that scrubbing and suction work clockwise as well as counter-clockwise and reach the bottom of the grooves. VPI conceived it as a homage to the HW-16.5, the machine the company started from, and to the handover from Harry to Mat Weisfeld.

The platter is driven by a reversible high-torque motor turning at 18 RPM, designed to last for decades and inspired by the one in the original HW 16. The body is a watertight aluminum enclosure; inside, a welded tank in stainless steel collects the fluid and empties at the rear. The controls are toggle switches of professional quality, rated for 100,000 cycles. The suction motor is stated to be able to raise a column of mercury by 120 inches (about 305 cm).

Key features

Platter rotation both clockwise and counter-clockwise

Reversible high-torque platter motor, 18 RPM

Waterproof aluminum enclosure

Welded tank in stainless steel, draining at the rear

Toggle switches with a life of 100,000 cycles

Delrin record clamp measuring 2 inches (about 51 mm)

Differences from the HW-16.5

VPI states that, next to the HW-16.5, the MW-1 Cyclone runs more quietly and, thanks to the aluminum enclosure, is tougher.
